Kevin Durant has identified San Antonio as his preferred landing spot amid growing trade discussions involving the Phoenix Suns, according to reporting from The Athletic‘s Sam Amick and Jon Krawczynski, adding credibility to previous report.
Despite the Minnesota Timberwolves’ involvement in recent negotiations, league sources say Durant is not interested in joining the Western Conference finalist. Instead, the 15-time All-Star is eyeing destinations such as the Spurs, Heat, and Rockets.
While Phoenix has engaged in meaningful talks with multiple teams, none of the current proposals — including those from the Timberwolves, Heat, and Rockets — have met the franchise’s asking price.
San Antonio, viewed as a long-term fit for Durant, has been conservative in its approach. The Spurs have not offered their No. 2 overall pick or Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, both of whom are considered untouchable in trade scenarios.
Phoenix is seeking a return package centered on impact players, not just draft compensation. With Durant entering the final year of his contract at $54.7 million, the Suns are reportedly prioritizing flexibility and win-now talent over future picks.
Durant, who averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists across 75 games last season, remains one of the league’s most efficient scorers. However, the Suns failed to reach the postseason and are now looking to reset their roster under new management.
Houston has submitted what sources describe as a firm offer, but the Suns are said to be underwhelmed. The Rockets, who finished second in the West at 52–30, are considered a serious suitor due to their mix of young talent and assets.
The Miami Heat are also in “legitimate pursuit” of Durant, per Marc Stein. Miami re-engaged with Phoenix shortly after the offseason began, aiming to build a package that includes veterans and draft capital.
The Spurs closed the 2024-25 season with a 34–48 record, missing the playoffs but boasting one of the most promising cores in the league. With Victor Wembanyama and Castle leading the rebuild, the addition of Durant would instantly elevate the team into playoff contention.
While Toronto and Minnesota have expressed interest, both are viewed as unlikely destinations due to Durant’s lack of enthusiasm.
Phoenix remains open to moving Durant before the June 25 NBA Draft, but only if the right offer surfaces.
