The New Orleans Pelicans are reportedly focused on moving up in the 2025 NBA Draft to secure Rutgers forward Ace Bailey. Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports cited league sources who believe new Pelicans general manager Joe Dumars sees Bailey as a primary target.
Bailey, a 6-foot-8 wing, averaged 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds this season. His blend of size, athleticism, and perimeter scoring has attracted interest from several lottery teams, including New Orleans.
The Pelicans currently hold the seventh pick but are actively exploring ways to climb the draft order. Rumors linking Herb Jones to a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers to move up to the third pick have been denied by NBA insiders, including reporter Fletcher Mackel.
Philadelphia, holding the third pick, is in trade discussions with the San Antonio Spurs, who own the second overall selection. The Sixers have shown interest in multiple prospects, including Bailey, VJ Edgecombe, and Dylan Harper. Rutgers’ forward is scheduled for a workout with Philadelphia next week.
Despite Philadelphia’s interest, the Pelicans remain intent on acquiring Bailey, according to sources. New Orleans is seeking to build around its current core after finishing the 2024–25 season with a 21-61 record and missing the playoffs.
The 2025 NBA Draft lottery produced the Dallas Mavericks with the No. 1 pick, followed by San Antonio at No. 2, and Philadelphia at No. 3. Bailey is viewed as one of the top forward prospects behind Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper.
The Pelicans’ desire to move up in the draft aligns with the need to add versatile wing talent to their roster. Bailey’s ability to score off the dribble and defend multiple positions fits the team’s long-term plan.
With the draft set for June 25, the trade landscape remains fluid. The Pelicans are positioned to pursue multiple avenues to improve their draft status. Ace Bailey stands out as a key piece in their rebuilding strategy.
