Ricky Rubio has recently offered clarity on a cryptic social media post he shared last week, which some interpreted as a possible retirement announcement.

As reported by Cesare Milanti of Eurohoops.net, Rubio addressed the speculation, emphasizing that the message was not meant to signal the end of his basketball career.

“This isn’t a farewell. It’s simply a thank you,” Rubio explained. “It comes from my year of reflection, and I wanted to do something that’s rarely done: to thank those who have been or are important to you. But it has no other message.”

While the post wasn’t intended as a formal goodbye, Rubio stopped short of confirming a return to professional basketball.

His future remains uncertain, and he acknowledged that both playing again and stepping away are possibilities he’s considering.

“Everything is open. I might play again – why not? – or I might not, and that wouldn’t be a bad idea either,” he said.

“It’s something I’d like to consider in the near future. For now, I just wanted to say thank you and also see how it affects me as a person, and if it gives me energy to move in one direction or another.”

Rubio officially concluded his NBA tenure in January 2024 and returned to Spain, joining FC Barcelona.

However, he did not suit up for the club this past season, having taken a mental health break to focus on his well-being.

Rubio played 12 seasons for 4 NBA teams, including the Timberwolves and Jazz. He averaged 10.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.1 rebounds in 698 regular-season games.
