The New York Knicks are reportedly set to request permission from the Dallas Mavericks to interview head coach Jason Kidd, following the recent dismissal of Tom Thibodeau.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, New York’s interest in Kidd is described as “serious,” with some league sources suggesting he is at the top of the Knicks’ list to replace Thibodeau.

Kidd, who played his final NBA season with the Knicks in 2012–13, has a history with the franchise. He also coached current Knicks star Jalen Brunson during their time together in Dallas, potentially adding to the appeal of his candidacy.

While Kidd is under contract with the Mavericks through the 2026–27 season, it’s unclear how Dallas will respond to New York’s request.

In the past, teams have required compensation for releasing a coach under contract, as was the case when the Milwaukee Bucks sent draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets to hire Kidd in 2014.

The Knicks’ coaching search continues as they aim to build upon their recent playoff success and pursue long-term championship goals.
