In a recent interview with Grant Afseth of RG.org, Washington Wizards’ All-Rookie big man Alex Sarr reflected on his development during his first NBA season, emphasizing that his progress went beyond just the numbers on the stat sheet.
“I feel like kind of everything,” Sarr explained. “Defensively, I think physicality. Offensively, trying to get to the rim more, more drives. So I think that’s how I developed the most, for sure.”
His focus on becoming more aggressive offensively and improving his physical presence on defense highlights the all-around growth he experienced during his rookie campaign.
Throughout 67 games, the 6-foot-10 forward/center posted solid averages of 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game for the Wizards.
However, as Afseth points out, Sarr faced some early shooting struggles, connecting on just 39.4% of his overall field goals and 30.8% of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Sarr also credited the Wizards’ coaching staff, led by head coach Brian Keefe, for fostering a culture of accountability and commitment.
“They’re holding everybody accountable,” he said, describing the staff’s efforts to establish a clear team identity. “Trying to build something here and everybody’s bought into building our identity.”
With a promising rookie season behind him, Sarr is now preparing to represent his home country of France in the upcoming EuroBasket tournament this summer.
This international experience could further enhance his skills and confidence as he continues to grow as a player.
