Giannis Antetokounmpo has not formally requested a trade from the Milwaukee Bucks, but league sources tell The Athletic that he is keeping an open mind about his future and is currently in a “fact-finding” phase.
According to Sam Amick, Antetokounmpo is having ongoing conversations with close and trusted associates as he evaluates his situation in Milwaukee, making it clear he’s carefully observing the franchise’s direction and how things are unfolding around him.
While the Bucks had already faced looming challenges due to long-term salary cap constraints, aging key players, and restrictive luxury tax and apron implications, their immediate outlook worsened significantly after Damian Lillard suffered a torn Achilles in the first round of the playoffs.
This injury casts doubt on Milwaukee’s ability to contend in the near term and may influence Giannis’ thinking.
Given the uncertainty surrounding his future, several teams are reportedly positioning themselves as potential trade destinations should Antetokounmpo become available.
The Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs are considered among the top contenders, both possessing a strong combination of young talent, draft capital, and financial flexibility to put together a compelling offer.
Crucially, both franchises could also provide Giannis with a competitive supporting cast capable of contending for a championship.
Other teams such as the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, and Dallas Mavericks are said to be monitoring the situation from the sidelines, though they may be considered less likely destinations.
The Oklahoma City Thunder, meanwhile, are seen as a wildcard – with ample assets to create a strong offer, but their level of interest remains unclear and may depend on how deep a playoff run they make this season.
Antetokounmpo signed a contract extension with the Bucks in 2023 following the blockbuster trade for Lillard, signaling his belief in Milwaukee’s short-term championship window.
However, with free agency now looming in 2026, both Giannis and the Bucks could face difficult decisions ahead, particularly if the team’s title hopes continue to dim.
