A heated altercation just before halftime led to six technical fouls being assessed (Twitter video link via Bleacher Report), but according to Law Murray and Tony Jones of The Athletic, no players were ejected.
During the chaos, Michael Porter Jr. briefly stepped off the bench and onto the court before being quickly pulled back by an assistant coach – a move that could result in a one-game suspension and a fine of up to $50,000.
Reflecting on the situation, Porter admitted he wasn’t fully aware of the league’s strict rules about leaving the bench during on-court incidents.
“Sorry. I didn’t know the specific rule. I’m glad I didn’t make it very far,” Porter said (Twitter video link from Clippers beat writer Joey Linn).
“… To see my guys get in it like that, I’m just glad I didn’t make it very far. The coaches and my teammates were aware. Because I wasn’t fully aware of any type of rule, but I’m very thankful that I did not get tossed from this game or anything like that. Definitely a learning experience for sure.”
His quick return to the bench may have spared him a harsher punishment, but Porter acknowledged it’s a lesson he won’t soon forget.
