On March 18, the Sacramento Kings announced that Domantas Sabonis had been diagnosed with a moderate right ankle sprain and would be reevaluated in 10 days.
However, just six days later, Sabonis has been listed as questionable for Monday’s game against Boston.
According to Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee, the Kings have reported that Sabonis has made significant progress in his recovery and fully participated in Sunday’s practice.
What was initially expected to be an injury that could sideline him for at least six games may only result in a three-game absence.
Teammate Malik Monk had predicted this outcome the night Sabonis injured his ankle, saying, “It looked pretty bad, but Domas (is) strong. He’ll probably be back sooner than we think.”
If Sabonis returns earlier than expected, it would benefit his chances for end-of-season awards.
He needs to play at least 20 minutes in seven of the Kings’ remaining 12 games to meet the NBA’s 65-game rule for award eligibility.
Sacramento is also fighting for a play-in spot, currently sitting at 35-35, in ninth place in the Western Conference, 1.5 games ahead of the Suns and Mavericks, who have identical 34-37 records.
