The Cleveland Cavaliers have decided to waive forward JT Thor, who had been on a two-way contract with the team.
Thor was selected as the 37th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft out of Auburn University. He spent his first three seasons in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets before joining the Cavaliers in September on a two-way deal.
Standing at 6’9″, Thor was a regular fixture in Charlotte’s rotation, playing in a total of 165 games for the Hornets.
However, his role with the Cavaliers this season was more limited, appearing in just nine games and averaging 4.7 minutes of playing time per contest.
Regardless of his limited time on the floor, he demonstrated efficiency, scoring 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting in 42 minutes of play.
In addition to his time with the Cavaliers, Thor also participated in 24 games with the Cleveland Charge, the Cavs’ G League affiliate.
He played in both Tip-Off Tournament and regular season games, where he averaged 14.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in 31.8 minutes.
Despite his solid contributions, his shooting percentages were a bit underwhelming, with splits of .434 from the field, .276 from three-point range, and .762 from the free-throw line.
By waiving Thor, the Cavaliers are opening up a two-way contract slot, which they are reportedly planning to fill with Nae’Qwan Tomlin. Tomlin has allegedly agreed to a two-year, two-way contract with Cleveland.
Thor was officially waived on March 1, according to NBA.com, meaning he would still be eligible to participate in the playoffs if he signed with another team before the end of the season.
