Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic, despite repeated urgings from team management, was unable to get into better shape, according to reports. The 25-year-old guard’s conditioning and off-court habits became a growing concern for the organization, ultimately influencing their decision to trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Doncic, a five-time All-NBA selection, has dominated the league with his elite playmaking and scoring. However, his lifestyle choices, including drinking beer and smoking hookah, clashed with the disciplined culture Mavericks GM Nico Harrison sought to build, according to a report by Mike Vorkunov, Fred Katz, Christian Clark of The Athletic.
Management pushed Doncic to improve his fitness, even during a midseason wrist injury that sidelined him for five games. Despite these efforts, Doncic’s conditioning remained a point of contention, raising concerns about his long-term durability.
The Mavericks’ frustration with Doncic’s habits reportedly played a role in their blockbuster trade for Anthony Davis. Harrison, known for his disciplined approach, prioritized cultural fit and long-term sustainability over Doncic’s generational talent.
Doncic’s on-court performance never wavered, as he averaged at least 27 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists in each of the last five seasons. However, the Mavericks feared his body could break down sooner than expected, given his lifestyle and conditioning issues.
The trade shocked the NBA world, with many questioning the Mavericks’ decision to part ways with a player of Doncic’s caliber. Harrison, however, stood by the move, emphasizing the importance of building a team with the right cultural values.
Doncic’s departure marks the end of an era in Dallas, but the Mavericks are betting on Anthony Davis to lead them to championship contention. Time will tell if Harrison’s bold decision pays off.
