NBA commissioner Adam Silver was caught off guard, just like many others, when news broke two weeks ago about Luka Doncic’s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, as reported by Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press.

Speaking at his annual All-Star Weekend press conference, Silver revealed that he had not received any prior notice about the trade, expressing surprise over the unexpected move.

Despite the widespread criticism aimed at the Dallas Mavericks, particularly from their fan base, Silver refrained from criticizing the decision to part ways with their star player.

The Mavericks have faced significant backlash for trading Doncic, and many fans are struggling to understand the reasoning behind the deal.

“I can say one thing for sure: Whether or not history will ultimately judge this as a smart trade, they did what they thought was in the best interest of their organization,” Silver remarked.

“I have absolutely no knowledge or belief there were any ulterior motives, no doubt in my mind that the Dumont-Adelson families bought that team to keep it in Dallas. I have no doubt whatsoever that they’re committed to the long-term success of that franchise.”

Silver, understanding the frustration of the Mavericks’ fan base, expressed empathy for the Dallas supporters who are upset by the trade.

This is especially true given that the deal became even more contentious after Anthony Davis, who was acquired in the trade, suffered an injury in his first game with the team.

“Time will tell whether it was a smart trade,” Silver acknowledged. “But they should believe in their organization.”
