The Toronto Raptors are reportedly setting a high asking price for center Jakob Poeltl ahead of the trade deadline. According to Los Angeles Times’ Dan Woike, the Raptors are seeking more than a first-round pick, possibly two, in return for the veteran big man.
The Los Angeles Lakers, who are searching for a frontcourt upgrade to pair with Anthony Davis, have been linked to Poeltl. However, Toronto’s demands may be too steep for Los Angeles, which is hesitant to part with significant assets for a player who would play the same position as Davis.
Poeltl, 29, is averaging 14.6 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 31.2 minutes per game. He is in the second year of a four-year, $78 million contract, making him a long-term investment for any team looking to acquire him.
The Lakers, currently fifth in the Western Conference with a 26-19 record, are evaluating multiple frontcourt options. Along with Poeltl, Washington Wizards center Jonas Valanciunas has also been mentioned as a potential target.
Toronto, sitting at 15-32 and 12th in the Eastern Conference, is in a rebuilding phase following the departures of Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby. The Raptors’ decision to set a high price for Poeltl aligns with their strategy of maximizing returns for veteran players.
For the Lakers, acquiring Poeltl would likely require trading Rui Hachimura along with draft picks, a move the team appears reluctant to make. Given the front office’s preference for maintaining roster flexibility, Los Angeles may explore more cost-effective options before committing to a major trade.
