Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times believes that while the Bulls have a roster filled with young talent, only rookie forward Matas Buzelis possesses the raw potential to significantly alter the team’s future.
However, realizing that potential will require the 20-year-old Chicago native to grow and develop in multiple facets of his game.
Head coach Billy Donovan sees promise in Buzelis but acknowledges the challenges of transitioning into the NBA at such a young age.
“The one thing is, he has earned his minutes, which has been a positive,” Donovan said. “He has terrific upside and ability and talent. But he’s young.”
Drawing a comparison to Patrick Williams, Donovan emphasized the need for young players to eventually prove themselves beyond their youth.
“All these guys get into a situation where when they come into the league at an extremely young age, there’s a pass given on, ‘They’re young. They have to learn.’ And rightfully so.
“But after a period of time, you have to be able to do this. And with Matas, [it’s] the consistency part from him of understanding the league, understanding personnel, understanding who he’s guarding.”
Donovan expressed optimism about Buzelis’ potential, noting his work ethic and competitiveness.
“I’ve been really encouraged with the way he has responded, and I do think he’ll continue to improve. He’s a worker and gets in there and competes. But as a young guy, he has to learn.”
Ultimately, while Buzelis has the tools to become a game-changer for the Bulls, his success will hinge on his ability to adapt to the demands of the NBA and build consistency in his performance.
