Bill Simmons is widely expected to renew his current contract with Spotify when it expires in February, according to two sources who spoke with Semafor.

Simmons, a prominent sports and media personality, originally sold The Ringer to Spotify in 2020 as part of a $250 million acquisition deal that included a five-year agreement.

In recent months, Simmons has been deeply involved in several ambitious, long-term projects with Spotify that appear to go well beyond the scope and timeline of his current contract.

This suggests a strong ongoing partnership between Simmons and the streaming giant, positioning The Ringer as a cornerstone of Spotify’s broader content strategy.

Nevertheless, Simmons has previously explored alternative opportunities. In 2022, the New York Post reported that he had entered exploratory talks with other companies about the possibility of launching an entirely new platform.

During that time, Simmons voiced his frustrations with Spotify’s corporate structure, particularly in terms of decision-making processes and limitations on his ability to bring in top-tier talent.

Despite these earlier concerns, The Ringer has continued to grow its roster of high-profile contributors, recently adding well-known names such as ESPN analyst Todd McShay, basketball writer Kirk Goldsberry, and longtime collaborator David Jacoby.
