The Minnesota Timberwolves have made a roster change, waiving two-way guard Daishen Nix to create space for newly acquired guard Tristen Newton, who was claimed off waivers.

Nix, a 6’5” guard, joined the Timberwolves on a two-way contract after spending two seasons with the Houston Rockets. Known for his defensive tenacity and court vision, Nix played a developmental role for Minnesota this season.

However, with the emergence of other backcourt options and the addition of Newton, the team opted to move in a different direction.

Newton, a 6’5” guard as well, brings a versatile skill set that has caught the Timberwolves’ attention.

This season, Newton appeared in five games for the Indiana Pacers and averaged 17.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game in the G League with the Indiana Mad Ants.

While Nix’s time with the Timberwolves was brief, his potential remains evident. The 22-year-old Alaska native has shown flashes of promise in his young career, including his ability to facilitate and defend multiple positions.

Despite this setback, Nix’s skills and work ethic could earn him another opportunity in the NBA as teams look for young players with upside.

For now, the Timberwolves are banking on Newton’s impressive G League performance and his decorated collegiate career to add depth and playmaking to their backcourt.
