The Houston Rockets announced today that forward Jabari Smith Jr. has suffered a fracture in his left hand, which occurred during the team’s shootaround on Friday.
Standing at 6’11”, the versatile big man is projected to be sidelined for an estimated four to eight weeks as he recovers from the injury.
The 21-year-old has been a consistent presence for the Rockets this season, starting all 33 games he has played.
He is currently averaging 11.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game while posting solid shooting splits of .435 from the field, .354 from three-point range, and .867 from the free-throw line.
According to Danielle Lerner of The Houston Chronicle, Smith’s injury will require surgical intervention to properly address the fracture in his non-shooting hand.
However, the timing of the surgery is still being determined as the Rockets await a second medical opinion to assess the full extent of the damage.
