The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly setting their sights on Jonas Valanciunas as a potential trade acquisition. The Lithuanian center is widely regarded as one of the most appealing trade candidates leading up to the NBA’s February 6 trade deadline.
NBA insider Marc Stein highlighted Valanciunas in his recent Substack report, pointing out that his contract structure and skillset make him an attractive option.
The 31-year-old signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Washington Wizards last summer. The deal includes a fully non-guaranteed third year, making it a highly flexible asset for teams looking to bolster their rosters.
Valanciunas is averaging 12 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in just under 20 minutes per game in his first season with Washington. Known for his rebounding and scoring efficiency in the paint, the veteran center has drawn significant interest from multiple teams. League sources have frequently mentioned the Lakers as a frontrunner in potential trade discussions.
The Lakers are not alone in their pursuit of frontcourt reinforcements. Portland Trail Blazers’ center Robert Williams III is another name linked to Los Angeles. However, acquiring Williams may prove challenging. The Blazers have reportedly been reluctant to part ways with the 27-year-old, who is in the third year of a four-year, $48 million contract.
Portland remains invested in Williams despite his recent injury history, viewing his defensive versatility and pick-and-roll partnership with their young guards as crucial to their development.
Additionally, the Blazers’ crowded frontcourt includes Deandre Ayton, Duop Reath, and rookie Donovan Clingan, adding further uncertainty to any potential trade involving Williams.
For the Lakers, Valanciunas presents a less complicated trade scenario. His experience, durability, and reliable production fit well with Los Angeles’ needs as they look to solidify their interior presence. While the Lakers’ primary focus remains on surrounding LeBron James and Anthony Davis with complementary talent, adding Valanciunas would provide a significant boost to their rebounding and interior defense.
