DJ Augustin has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball. The news comes as he approaches his 37th birthday later this week, marking the end of a distinguished 15-season career in the NBA.
Augustin’s career spanned 976 regular season games, where he averaged 9.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in 23.4 minutes per game. He also made his mark in the postseason, appearing in 38 playoff games and averaging 8.2 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 21 minutes per game.
In a heartfelt message posted on his Instagram, Augustin reflected on his journey. “Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the game I’ve loved for so long,” he wrote.
He emphasized that basketball was more than just a sport, highlighting the unforgettable memories and relationships he formed throughout his career. He stated, “Basketball has been more than a sport, it has been a journey filled with unforgettable memories, friendships, lessons, and experiences beyond the court.”
Augustin began his professional journey after being selected ninth overall by the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2008 NBA Draft. During his time with the Bobcats, he became a key player, notably averaging a career-high 14.4 points and 6.1 assists during the 2010-11 season.
Following his stint in Charlotte, Augustin played for several teams, including the Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, and Chicago Bulls. His versatility as a point guard allowed him to adapt to various roles, contributing to each team he joined.
One of the highlights of Augustin’s career was his time with the Orlando Magic. He played a pivotal role in the team’s success during the 2018 NBA playoffs, notably hitting the game-winning three-pointer in Game 1 against the Toronto Raptors.
Augustin also had significant contributions to the Milwaukee Bucks and the Houston Rockets, showcasing his skills and experience. In his later years, he continued to demonstrate resilience and adaptability, even when faced with challenges.
