Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant addressed speculation regarding his contract extension, stating that it is not a priority for him right now. The 36-year-old forward, currently in the third year of a four-year, $194 million contract, emphasized his focus on playing out the remainder of his deal.
Durant has the option to sign a one-year extension worth $59.5 million for the 2026-27 season or wait until next summer to agree to a two-year extension valued at $123.8 million. Despite these options, the 13-time All-Star remains unconcerned about future negotiations. “I’m not even thinking about it,” Durant said after a team shootaround, via Duane Rankin of Arizona Republic. “I’m just going to play out my contract really, and just focus on that. Focus on the team.”
Eligible for the one-year extension since July 12, Durant has until Monday to sign it. The Suns, led by new team owner Mat Ishbia and general manager James Jones, have expressed their desire to keep Durant long-term. Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein reiterated this sentiment.
Durant, however, is less focused on the financial aspect of his future with the Suns, saying, “I’ve been blessed enough to be in this position for 18 years, and so I’m not really focused on the money part of it. I’m just trying to keep getting better and keep growing my game.”
The two-time NBA champion’s relationship with the Suns remains solid, according to team officials. Bartelstein, Ishbia, and Jones have all expressed confidence in Durant’s commitment to Phoenix.
Durant’s current deal runs through the 2025-26 season, after which he will become an unrestricted free agent. He is eligible for only a one-year extension due to the NBA’s “over-38 rule,” which limits long-term contracts for players who will be 38 years old or older during the contract term.
Durant remains a vital part of the Suns’ lineup, averaging 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5 assists last season. Phoenix, with one of the highest payrolls in the NBA, continues to build around their core, which includes stars like Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
