Fenerbahce has officially signed guard Skylar Mays until the end of the season to fill the void left by Scottie Wilbekin, who suffered a season-ending injury. Wilbekin tore his right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the first game of the 2024-2025 EuroLeague regular season, creating a significant gap in the Turkish club’s backcourt.
Mays, 27, had been participating in the Minnesota Timberwolves training camp in hopes of securing an NBA contract. However, the opportunity with Fenerbahce proved enticing enough for him to transition to European basketball.
Throughout his career, Mays has alternated between the NBA and the G League. Last season, he played 17 games for the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging just 1.3 points per game. Mays struggled to secure a consistent role in the NBA, leading him to explore opportunities in Europe. Earlier in the offseason, he was linked to other European clubs, including Olimpia Milano, but those deals fell through.
With Wilbekin sidelined, Mays will join Wade Baldwin to create a new backcourt pairing under head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius. This move is crucial for Fenerbahce as they aim to maintain their competitive edge in the EuroLeague.
Wilbekin’s injury occurred shortly after he entered the game against Olympiacos. While attempting a jump-stop move on a drive to the basket, he sustained the ACL tear, forcing him to exit the game.
Currently, Fenerbahce has opened their EuroLeague campaign with three wins and one loss. The Turkish giants will face reigning champions Panathinaikos next week, a matchup that will be crucial for their season.
Mays brings a blend of skills and versatility to Fenerbahce’s roster. His ability to score and create plays will be vital as the team adjusts to life without their star guard.
