Victor Wembanyama has made it clear that he’s committed to enhancing every element of his game. This summer, he focused intensely on his dribbling skills and worked on his pull-up three-pointer with former NBA star Jamal Crawford.
In addition, legendary coach Gregg Popovich dedicated time to developing Wembanyama’s versatility, teaching him how to operate effectively from “The Nowitzki spots” – those crucial areas on the wings and high post where Dirk Nowitzki dominated – and improving his execution in pick-and-roll situations.
Popovich is shaping Wembanyama into a player capable of excelling both as a ballhandler and a screener in those scenarios.
“For me, it’s the only solution,” Wembanyama shared in a Sports Illustrated profile, highlighting his drive to become an all-encompassing player.
“Expanding my game is not thinking twice when you want to do something crazy. I don’t think I’ve had one game where I really applied everything. Not one. I want eventually to have a wide variety of tools that I’ve really mastered.
“I don’t want to have a role on the court. I don’t want to be the shot blocker. I don’t want to be the scorer. I don’t want to be the playmaker. I want to be all of this at once.”
Wembanyama’s dedication is evident in his willingness to work with a wide range of coaching staff.
According to Popovich, Wembanyama spent the summer training with as many as eight to ten different Spurs coaches, each contributing to his development and pushing him closer to his goal of becoming a multi-dimensional threat on the basketball court.
