Chicago Bulls star Zach LaVine is embracing a new approach to his game as the team prepares for the 2024-25 season. After an offseason filled with trade rumors, LaVine remains with the Bulls and is adjusting to playing more off the ball.
Speaking about his new role, LaVine expressed comfort in the team’s evolving offensive strategy. “Injuries suck and they happen. Last year, I played 20-some games with a broken foot. But I feel good now, and we’re trying to get me in more and more (catch-and-shoots),” LaVine said, via KC Johnson. “I’m more than fine with getting easy shots off the ball. I like those stress-free shots.”
LaVine’s willingness to adapt to a different style of play is a positive development for the Bulls. Known for his scoring ability and athleticism, the 29-year-old shooting guard has been a focal point of Chicago’s offense since joining the team in 2017. However, as the Bulls look to find better chemistry and offensive balance, LaVine is prepared to take on a new challenge.
The 2023-24 season was a mixed bag for LaVine. He put up a career-high 51 points in a game against the Detroit Pistons on October 28, 2023, though the Bulls lost 118-102. That performance highlighted LaVine’s ability to take over games, but injuries took a toll on him. In February 2024, the Bulls announced that LaVine would undergo surgery on his right foot, marking the next step in his recovery process. Despite the setbacks, LaVine is optimistic about his health heading into the new season.
Last season, LaVine averaged 19.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in 34.9 minutes per game. While those numbers are solid, they represent a slight dip from his previous years, where he was often the team’s primary offensive weapon. Now, with the team focusing on more catch-and-shoot opportunities for him, LaVine is set to shift into a role that could allow him to capitalize on easier scoring chances.
