The Orlando Magic have officially signed free agent center Robert Baker II, as confirmed by the team’s President of Basketball Operations, Jeff Weltman. The specific terms of the contract have not been disclosed, following the team’s usual policy.
Baker, a 6’11” center, spent last season in the NBA G League, where he played 29 games for the College Park Skyhawks. He averaged 14.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 52.3% from the field in 28.2 minutes of play. His performance in the G League helped solidify his place as a viable prospect for NBA teams.
Despite going undrafted, Baker has accumulated experience across multiple leagues. In 87 G League games with teams like Stockton, Lakeland (now Osceola), and College Park, he has averaged 10.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.18 blocks per game. His international experience spans stints in Slovakia, Puerto Rico, and Japan.
Before his professional career, Baker played four seasons at Harvard University. He appeared in 99 games for the Crimson, averaging 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. His collegiate career included back-to-back Ivy League championships in 2017-18 and 2018-19, contributing to his strong reputation as a hard-working, versatile player.
Baker is set to wear number 7 with the Magic as he embarks on his NBA journey. Orlando is looking to strengthen its frontcourt depth, and Baker brings height, athleticism, and a solid all-around game to the roster.
In addition to signing Baker, the Magic also announced that they have waived guard Javonte Smart. Smart, who was signed by Orlando in September, appeared in just one preseason game, where he scored three points in six minutes of play. The decision to waive Smart clears a roster spot for Baker’s arrival as the team finalizes its preparations for the upcoming NBA season.
