Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler has expressed his determination to be more available on the court for the 2024-25 NBA season. After missing a significant portion of last season due to injuries, Butler is focused on contributing to the Heat’s success by playing in as many games as possible.
“I want to play as many games as possible,” Butler said after a recent practice, as reported by Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. “I’ll leave it at that. I don’t need to put a number on the amount of games that I play. I know the more games that I play, the more opportunities that my squad has of winning. I do know that.”
Butler’s availability is a key topic for Miami this season. While he remains a central figure for the Heat, the franchise did not offer him a contract extension this offseason, leading to speculation about his future. Currently in the second year of a three-year deal, Butler holds a player option for the final year. Miami is reportedly considering his availability as a factor in potential future decisions regarding his role with the team.
While contract discussions linger in the background, Butler made it clear that financial incentives are not driving his desire to play more games. “If we’re being brutally honest, no matter what, nothing I do now is going to get me paid anymore money,” Butler explained. “Even though I don’t care about the money. All-NBA, dah, dah, dah, dah, none of that is going to matter. I’m at a point right now that I got more than enough money. I’m just here to win.”
Butler’s focus on playing more games comes after a productive but injury-impacted 2023-24 season. He appeared in 60 regular season games, averaging 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5 assists in 34 minutes per game. His season was cut short by a medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain suffered during a play-in game against the Philadelphia 76ers, preventing him from participating in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
Despite the setbacks, Butler had several standout performances last season. On November 16, 2023, he scored 36 points to lead the Heat to a 122–115 win over the Brooklyn Nets, securing Miami’s first seven-game win streak since 2018. A month later, he hit a buzzer-beating step-back jumper to defeat the Chicago Bulls 118–116, adding another memorable moment to his career.
In February 2024, Butler recorded his 16th career triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists in a 116–104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. His season-high came in March, when he scored 37 points on efficient shooting in a 126–120 win against the Utah Jazz. These performances demonstrated his continued ability to impact games, despite injuries affecting his availability.
Butler’s commitment to playing more games aligns with Miami’s broader goals of making another deep playoff run. The Heat reached the NBA Finals in 2023, but their 2024 campaign was hampered by injuries to key players, including Butler. With a healthy Butler on the court, Miami’s chances of contending in the Eastern Conference improve significantly.
