Adams was born in Rotorua, New Zealand, to a Tongan mother and an English father. His father, Sid Adams, was a tall man at 6 feet 11 inches and had a significant influence on his children’s height. The average height of Adams’ brothers is about 6 feet 9 inches, while his sisters average 6 feet.

Two of Adams’ half-sisters are notable athletes. Dame Valerie Adams is a dual Olympic gold medalist and a four-time world champion shot-putter. Her sister, Lisa Adams, is a para-athlete who has also excelled in shot-put, winning gold at the Paralympics.
Adams’ athletic family extends beyond his sisters. His brothers, Warren and Sid Jr., have had careers in the New Zealand National Basketball League. His sister, Gabriella Adams-Gavet, has represented New Zealand on the basketball court.
