Washington Wizards sophomore Bilal Coulibaly has shared insights about his rookie season, admitting moments of confusion on the court. The young guard’s honesty sheds light on the challenges many players face when transitioning to the NBA.
“Last year, there were some times where I felt awkward on the court and I didn’t know what I was doing for real,” Coulibaly revealed. This candid reflection underscores the adjustment period rookies often encounter.
According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic, Coulibaly has made noticeable improvements since his debut season. He now stands at 6-foot-7 ½ without shoes and weighs 205 pounds, an increase of 10 pounds since the end of his first year.
This physical development has contributed to his growing confidence as he prepares for the new season. “I just feel like I know what’s going on on the court,” he stated.
Coulibaly’s experience helping France secure a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics has also played a significant role in his growth. Competing at a high level has enhanced his skills and boosted his self-assurance.
With a year of NBA experience behind him, Coulibaly has a clearer grasp of his role within the Wizards’ system. “Now I know what I gotta do, what Coach really wants me to do,” he said.
During his rookie campaign, Coulibaly averaged 8.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 27.2 minutes per game. While these statistics are commendable for a first-year player, he seeks to elevate his performance this season.
Understanding where he fits into the team’s offensive strategies will be critical for his progress. “I know where my spots are. I know where I’m going to get the ball. It makes it way easier for me,” Coulibaly explained.
In the preseason opener for the 2024-25 season, Coulibaly scored 10 points in a loss against the Toronto Raptors. The final score was 125-98, but Coulibaly’s performance indicated his potential moving forward.
