Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz has made a surprising move within the European basketball scene, naming Pablo Laso as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

This decision comes shortly after Laso parted ways with FC Bayern Munich due to personal reasons, marking a swift transition for the esteemed coach.

Laso, renowned for his coaching prowess, brings a wealth of experience, having guided Real Madrid to two EuroLeague titles in 2015 and 2018 during his decade-long tenure.

His return to Baskonia holds sentimental value. It marks a homecoming for the 56-year-old, who began his professional career at the club as a player in 1984 and remained a pivotal figure until 1995.

As a head coach, Laso’s achievements are unparalleled. Under his guidance, Real Madrid dominated the Spanish basketball scene, capturing six Spanish League titles, six Spanish Cups, seven Spanish Super Cups, and one FIBA Intercontinental Cup.

Laso’s coaching excellence was further underscored by his recognition as the EuroLeague Coach of the Year in the triumphant seasons of 2014-15 and 2017-18.

Now, nearly three decades after departing Baskonia as a player, Laso returns to lead the team he once called home, aiming to build on his legacy and guide Baskonia to further success in the EuroLeague and beyond.
