Grant Williams’ brief stint with the Dallas Mavericks ended swiftly as he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets for P.J. Washington at the deadline.

The Mavericks, who initially acquired Williams in a sign-and-trade, quickly parted ways with him, also involving Seth Curry and a 2027 first-round pick in the deal for Washington.

According to Tim MacMahon, the decision to trade Williams was not only about getting Washington but also a move to distance the team from Williams due to personality clashes, including his choice to switch shoe endorsements from Luka Doncic to Jayson Tatum.

MacMahon labeled the acquisition as “a massive whiff,” with concerns raised by multiple front offices about the Mavericks’ short-term improvement and their lack of control over draft capital from 2027 to 2030.
