Lebanon secured a well-deserved inaugural victory in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 by prevailing over Cote d’Ivoire with a final score of 94-84.

In the context of the ongoing race for an automatic berth in the 2024 Olympics representing Asia, Lebanon significantly bolstered its chances.

They began the Classification Round 17-32 with a pivotal win, thanks to the notable performances of Amir Saoud and Omari Spellman.

Throughout the match, Cote d’Ivoire managed to stay competitive, especially in the fourth quarter, as Lebanon maintained a precarious double-digit lead.

When there were three minutes left on the clock, and the score stood at 83-78, Amir Saoud took a bold initiative, sinking a heavily contested three-point shot to widen Lebanon’s lead to eight points.

Despite the Elephants’ efforts to narrow the gap to as little as two points, Saoud’s crucial shot ultimately provided Lebanon with just enough advantage.

Right from the beginning of the game, Saoud exhibited exceptional focus and effectiveness, accumulating 16 points during the first half and concluding the second quarter with another critical shot.

Given Wael Arakji’s absence, the experienced guard assumed a leadership role and notched an impressive 29 points. In addition, he distributed 8 assists and secured 5 rebounds.

Omari Spellman also delivered an outstanding performance, contributing 25 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 blocks to the triumphant effort.

On the opposing side, Jean Philippe Daily managed to record 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals despite the defeat.
