Facing a significant early disadvantage, Puerto Rico orchestrated a comeback from a double-digit shortfall. They witnessed four of their players achieving double-doubles as they overcame the resilient debutant team from South Sudan.

This victory marked their initiation in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, with a 101-96 overtime triumph within Group B.

Despite trailing by 12 points at one juncture, Puerto Rico showcased their expertise during overtime, securing a vital win as they strive to advance to the Second Round for the second consecutive World Cup appearance.

“I feel extremely blessed that we came out with a win,” Puerto Rico guard Stephen Thompson said. “It was very ugly but we managed to come out with a win. And that is what is important to win these game.

“I think we can use our finish to the game moving forward. We need to play with the same energy, care and focus as we did for the last 4 minutes and overtime. Everybody playing like that for 40 minutes and I like our chances against anybody.”
