When Luca Banchi unveiled Latvia’s 12-man roster, the absence of Janis Timma surprised many. The player himself seemed unprepared for exclusion from the FIBA World Cup 2023 team. Timma expressed his disappointment with the coach’s choice in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

“This decision has undoubtedly been one of the most painful moments in my journey with the Latvian national team. Over the years, I’ve proudly carried the name and honor of our team, regardless of the circumstances.

Speaking about the situation at hand, as you are already aware, I sustained a calf muscle injury in Liepaja. However, I can confidently state that I have made a complete recovery, and I am now at 100% health. There’s no pain, no limitations on any activity. Even if there were, I would have been willing to play through the injury, all for the sake of upholding Latvia’s pride on the World Cup stage. I’m certain that I could have contributed more to the team, helping to achieve those important victories.

But, unfortunately, I didn’t make the decision. And I still can’t figure out why. I guess I will never understand either.

During the summer, I intentionally engaged in various leagues to keep myself in shape, ensuring I was prepared for national team selection. Throughout this period, I remained entirely injury-free, without any setbacks or minor issues. I showcased my abilities well, whether it was in the Miami Pro League or BIG3.

But a decision is a decision.

While I initially hesitated to address this matter, the non-stop barrage of DMs and questions from journalists and other confused people prompted me to share my perspective here, all in one go. My intention is to put an end to unnecessary speculation.

I want to say thank you to the medical professionals, physiotherapists, and fitness coaches who invested the greatest effort into keeping me healthy and ready to play.

In the coming weeks, we will be talking to teams in Europe and beyond to find the best option for me. For now, I will continue to work, keep fit, and be 100% healthy and ready for new challenges.

All the best to you guys. I am with you. OUR LAND — LATVIA.”
