The Nigerian national team received a significant boost as Suns forward Chimezie Metu confirmed his commitment to representing Nigeria in the upcoming FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Lagos.
Metu expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is one of the most important windows in the history of basketball in Nigeria, and I’ll be there ready to go.” His decision strengthens the team’s chances of securing a spot in the 2024 FIBA Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
Inspired by Metu’s commitment, Lakers guard Gabe Nnamdi Vincent and Suns guard Josh Okogie are contemplating joining Metu in Lagos for the Pre-Qualifying Olympic Tournament. Their potential inclusion would further bolster Nigeria’s roster and enhance their prospects in the tournament.
The 2024 FIBA Men’s Pre-Qualifying Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in Africa will feature five tournaments, with Lagos hosting the event from August 12 to 20, 2023. Nigeria has been placed in Group A alongside Mali, Senegal, and Uganda for the competition.
Having already participated in three Olympic Games (2012 London, 2016 Rio, and 2020 Tokyo), Nigeria aims to build on its previous successes and continue to make strides in the international basketball arena. The potential additions of Vincent and Okogie would further solidify Nigeria’s aspirations of securing a coveted spot in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
