There are buzzes around the league that it would be better for Luka Doncic and the Mavericks to have another All-star player on their side. But inside the mind of the Slovenian phenom, they are good to go even without another one.
Asked by Malika Andrews on the NBA Today if he believes that he needs another star teammate to truly contend, Doncic claimed that they already have a great team filled by underrated players that “should be talked about more.”
“No, I think we have great players on our team,” Doncic said. “There’s plenty of very underrated guys that I think should be talked about more. So, I don’t think so. I think we have a great team.”
When asked by Andrews who are those underrated guys he’s referring to, Doncic didn’t shy away in providing major props to his teammates in the likes of Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie and the newcomer big man Christian Wood.
“Number one is Dorian Finney-Smith. He’s worked really, really hard. He’s one of the best defensive guys. If he’s open, he’s gonna make a shot,” Doncic said.
“Spence (Dinwiddie) is gonna have a big role this year. Talking about Christian Wood, he’s a new player to Dallas but I think he’s gonna be huge for us.”
Majority of the contending ball clubs in the NBA are stuffed by superstar talents and high-powered skill sets, but the determined Mavs commander in Doncic stands unfazed by the challenges looming. Though he lacks star power behind him, his unwavering belief and acknowledgement to his key supporting cogs only shows a true and unblemished leadership flowing through his generational traits.
The Mavs are fresh from a solid 2021-2022 season wherein they pulverized the Phoenix Suns en route to their first Conference Finals appearance since 2011. With Doncic still around and committed, the franchise’s future remains bright and promising for greater heights ahead.
