University of Michigan basketball head coach Juwan Howard is reportedly “gaining traction” within NBA front offices as a possible coaching candidate.

Howard played 19 seasons in the NBA and then joined the Miami Heat coaching staff as an assistant coach under Erik Spoelstra from 2013-2019.

He also interviewed for the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers before he took the Michigan job.

Howard returned to his alma mater last summer after longtime Michigan head coach John Beilein left for the NBA and took the Cavaliers job.

If Howard ultimately leaves Michigan for the NBA, it will be the second time in as many years that Michigan’s head coach left for the NBA.

Howard released a statement on the potential NBA interest in him.

“There was a report of my name as a potential candidate for NBA coaching opportunities. While I am flattered and know it will more than likely happen again, I am NOT exploring, seeking or listening,” Howard’s statement read in part.
