Jayson Tatum wanted the Phoenix Suns to draft him, not the Boston Celtics

Jayson Tatum appeared on Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes’ podcast, “All the Smoke”, and revealed something interesting.

Prior to the NBA draft, Tatum’s agent called and told him that the Boston Celtics had traded their pick and moved to third and that they wanted him to come workout with them. Tatum already had his mindset on going to Phoenix after visiting and hanging out with the coaching staff, and touring the city. Tatum’s statement:

“Nah, I don’t wanna go to Boston. I like it out here in Phoenix. The weather’s nice… I wanna go to Phoenix.”

If not for Tatum’s mother and his college coach (Coach K), he wouldn’t have attended the workout with Boston. He says Coach K told him that “Brad Stevens was a great coach and he would learn a lot”, which changed his mind. If not for these two, imagine what the Phoenix Suns could’ve potentially looked like. Tatum could’ve partnered with Devin Booker. Two box office players who could have turned the franchise around.

What if.
