Damian Jennings has been named as the new head coach of the Great Britain Women’s team.

The appointment comes nearly 81 days until the start of Eurobasket Women in France where they will square off against the hosts, Latvia and Serbia in Group C.

The Englishman, who is currently in charge at the University of Calgary will be assisted by Ken Shields and Vanessa Ellis who both retain their existing roles. Jennings left for Canada after steering UWIC to an England Basketball League title last season.

He was responsible for scouting and analysis for Tom Maher at last summer’s Olympic Games in London.

“Having been part of the coaching team since 2006 I’m honoured to have been given the chance to lead British Basketball’s Women’s programme into EuroBasket 2013,” Jennings said. “We are ambitious and we want to build a team capable of challenging for honours at the top of the international game.

“After convincing UK Sport that basketball was worthy of investment, we have a tough challenge ahead, but it’s one I know both staff and players will thrive on. We want to deliver the best performances possible at the up-coming Eurobasket in France.

“I want to thank British Basketball for the support they have given me. It’s exciting to be part of a programme with such high ambitions for the future.”
