Women’s Olympic basketball round-up (day nine)

A round-up of the penultimate day of preliminary action at the Basketball Arena and the final round of matches in the women’s competition.

Perfect French sink Russia

France top Group B with a perfect 5-0 record as they defeated Russia 65-54.

Despite the loss Russia finish second in a dead rubber match.

Celine Dumerc led France with 12 points with Evgeniya Belyakova hitting 14 in reply for Russia.

Czechs left to wait following win over Angola

Czech Republic defeated Angola 82-47 in the final game of the morning session.

The Czechs now wait to see what other results go their way while Angola end their Olympic adventure with a 0-5 record.

Michaela Zrustova led the Czechs with 20 points with Nassecela Mauricio leading the Angolans with 18.

Australia beat Canada and end as runners-up

Australia defeated Canada 72-63 to leapfrog Russia and finish second in Group B.

Canada, who were also through before the game finish fourth.

Liz Cambage led the Opals with 19 points with Kim Smith ending as Canada’s leading scorer with 17.

USA thrash China to earn top spot

USA beat China 114-66 to give them top spot in Group A.

Diana Taurasi led all scorers with 22 points for the United States. Chen Nan hit 16 in vain for China as they finish second.

After a close, and high-scoring first quarter, the U.S broke away with a 30-8 second period which included a 10-0 run, streching the first two quarters which gave them victory.

USA will play Canada in the quarter-finals with China facing-off against Russia.

Turkey beat Croatia

Turkey beat Croatia 70-65 in the first game of the evening session.

Kuanitra Hollingvorth led the victorious Turks with 14 points as they prepare to meet Russia in the quarter-finals.

Croatia who were led by Ana Lelas’ 14 points are already eliminated.

Brazil leave hosts winless

Brazil ended their Olympic Games with a 78-66 victory over Great Britain.

With both teams both out, it was a game where nothing but pride was on the line.

Brazil were led by Erika Sousa’s 16 points. Natalie Stafford grabbed a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds for GB.
