ImagePortuguese basketball is in shock following the death of Ovarense’s American guard, Kevin Widemond.

The 23-year-old, who hails from Newark, New Jersey, and played basketball at Texas A&M University-Commerce, had only joined the team last month.

Widemond was on the bench during Ovarense’s game against Academica in Leiria over the weekend when he just collapsed.

Emergency services took Widemond to Santo Andre Hospital but could not revive him and he was pronounced dead.

"The Federation laments to announce that Kevin Widemond died after suffering cardiac arrest," a Portuguese Basketball Federation statement said.

Ovarsense sporting director Jose Eduardo described Widemond as a “good person and very humble”.

Eduardo said that the player had undergone a battery of medical tests when he joined them and also explained that he had no negative medical history.
