One of the biggest transfers of the summer market was sealed today as Maccabi Tel Aviv announced the signing of Sofocles Schortsianitis for the next two seasons!
The rumours about a possible deal had started days ago but things got in an order yesterday when Big Sofo’s agent travelled to Israel to discuss the signing in detail. After everything was agreed upon the agent Panayiotis Kapazoglou alongside Maccabi’s chairman Shimo Mirhazi and the team’s head coach David Blatt took a day-trip to Cyprus this morning were the contract was signed.
Big Sofo is currently in Cyprus as a member of the Greek National Team who started off their friendly games against Cyprus last night while they will also face Russia, Croatia and Germany in the coming day as part of the “Love Cyprus Basketball Tournament”.
Schortsianitis was sought after by numerous teams including Panathinaikos, Caja Laboral and Unicaja Malaga amongst others but the Greek international chose Maccabi and justified his choice:
“From the moment I chose not to continue my career in Greece I looked for a great and organised team where I would have significant playing time and would contribute. I found all these in Maccabi. I am thrilled to be moving to Tel Aviv and “Nokia Arena”. I know about the great tradition of Maccabi, about their fans and the love of basketball in Israel and I will do everything in my hand for Maccabi”.
Big Sofo will become the second Greek player to wear the Yellow jersey after Nestoras Kommatos.
