Newly crowned NBA champion Golden State Warriors have not received an invite to attend the White House despite earlier reports stating that they unanimously voted not to visit President Donald Trump as is the annual tradition for winning teams in the States.

The Warriors completed a convincing 4-1 Finals win in the early hours of Tuesday morning [CET] with a 129-120 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers with Kevin Durant claiming the Finals MVP as he won his first title and Golden State’s second in three years.

But despite several tweets stating that the Warriors would not head to the American capital, the club released a statement saying otherwise.

Golden State did attend the White House ceremony in their honour when they won the championship in 2015 when former President Barack Obama was in office.

The Cavaliers, who won a thrilling NBA Finals last year also visited President Obama in the White House.

Despite the rumour, sporting teams opting to not attend the White House have happened. Several of the New England Patriots did not attend the White House when they captured the NFL Super Bowl title earlier this year with many citing political reasons.
