Zalgiris are not looking to sign a coach from outside the club. Sarunas Sakalauskas who is currently employed at the club as Director of Sports will become the new head coach. 48-year-old coach previously coached Eisbaren Bremerhaven through 2001-2009.
Sakalauskas has also coached Sakalai in 1999/2000 before leaving for Lietuvos Rytas where he spent the 2000/2001 season. The coach has the support of Vladimir Romanov, the owner of Zalgiris, which is a key factor in picking a new head coach.
Zalgiris lost LKL Finals 3-4 against Lietuvos Rytas this season. The club was coach-less in the last four games of the finals after the firing of Darius Maskoliunas.
It is reported that Zalgiris is looking to add a center and a point guard.
