The first gameday is over for the 2009-2010 Euroleague and the attendance result is pretty poor mainly because of low figures in games like Fenerbache – Barcelona, Maroussi – CSKA and AJ Milano – Panathinaikos.
The name of Euroleague defending Champs, Panathinaikos, was not enough to call the Italians to the arena, as only 1500 fans attended the game. Same picture in Athens, where only 1650 Maroussi fans attended the game against Euroleague finalists CSKA. Worst of all was Fenerbahce – Barcelona with just a 1000 tickets sold, probably due to the game of the football department, held roughly at the same time.
Of course Maccabi topped the list with 11000 fans in permanently sold-out Nokia Arena.
The total and average number, significantly dropped compaired to last season's openning gameday. A total of 55.847 tickets were sold this year for an average of 4654, while last season the numbers were numbers of 70.942 and 5912. In fact only one gameday of last season had a lowest attendance than this season's openner.
The low attendance can be traced back to the replacement of last season's ticket leader Alba by Maroussi who has a very narrow fanbase and the fact that Panathinaikos did not play at home.
