Crvena Zvezda stuns Olympiacos with defensive masterclass

Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade held Olympiacos Piraeus to 57 points in a 62-57 road victory on Friday, November 6, earning its seventh win in eight EuroLeague games.

With Novak Djokovic watching courtside, Zvezda delivered another defensive performance to strengthen its position among the competition’s top teams. Jordan Nwora led the visitors with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, while Chris Jones added 10 points.

Sasha Vezenkov scored Olympiacos’s first seven points, but Zvezda quickly took control with a 13-0 run fueled by Nwora. The hosts managed only 11 points in the opening quarter and struggled to find consistent scoring opportunities.

Zvezda continued to dictate the game before halftime. The visitors closed the second quarter with a 16-2 surge, building an 18-point advantage and holding Olympiacos to just 22 points in the first half.

The hosts also struggled from three-point range, making only one of their first 16 attempts from beyond the arc. They finished the game with five makes on 36 attempts, a 13.9% success rate.

Olympiacos failed to find an offensive rhythm early in the third quarter, scoring only one field goal in the opening five minutes. However, Evan Fournier then scored eight quick points as the hosts launched a 15-2 run to get back into contention.

Vezenkov added eight consecutive points before Fournier cut the deficit to 55-57 in the closing stages. Christian Koloko responded with a basket inside, and Jones followed with a decisive three-pointer to secure the victory.

Vezenkov finished with a game-high 27 points, but received limited offensive support. Fournier was Olympiacos’s second-leading scorer with 12 points.

The victory lifted Crvena Zvezda to 7-3, keeping it second in the EuroLeague standings. Olympiacos also stands at 7-3 but dropped to fifth place.

Crvena Zvezda visits Real Madrid on Thursday, November 12, while Olympiacos hosts Dubai Basketball on the same day.
