Devin Booker scored 30 points as the Phoenix Suns snapped a four-game losing streak with a 117-104 win over the Orlando Magic on Thursday, November 5.
Booker also recorded eight assists and helped Phoenix put together its most complete performance of the season. The Suns led by 23 entering the fourth quarter after outscoring Orlando 33-22 in the third.
“I feel like we’ve lost every way possible so far from being blown out to giving up a early lead um to some late game problems,” Booker said after the win. “So, you know, tonight was the closest I’d say we put a full 48 minutes together. So, something to build on um something to learn from and you know, there’s obviously a lot of season left.”
The Suns had lost the previous night at home to Portland, making the response against Orlando particularly important. Booker said the team needed to maintain its belief while continuing to improve.
“Yeah, I think you know our whole thing is putting a full game together,” he said. “I feel like we’ve lost every way possible so far.”
Booker explained how Phoenix’s offensive actions helped him find an early rhythm. He made 11 of 22 shots, including four of eight from three-point range, and scored 23 points in the first half.
“Shot out also great screen and angles,” Booker said. “You know forcing the team to go over I think I got two early threes to start, and then that just opens everything up you know the rest of the way.”
He added that the Suns needed to recognize defensive coverages quickly and take advantage of the opportunities they created.
“Trying to take what the defense gives you,” Booker said. “And you know when you’re being guarded like I do those actions have to be quick they have to be on point.”
Booker also discussed the balance between scoring and involving his teammates, explaining how his aggression can create opportunities for others.
“The more aggressive I am, the easier the reads are on the backside,” he said. “And applying that pressure to the defenses and forcing them to switch or forcing them to double opens up easier shots for the rest of the team.”
That approach helped Dillon Brooks score 24 points and Miles Bridges add 18. Phoenix shot 17-of-34 from three-point range, while Orlando committed 25 turnovers that resulted in 36 Suns points.
Booker also highlighted the importance of defensive pressure, an identity he believes Phoenix needs to rediscover.
“I would say our motto last year is turn teams over, pick up the intensity defensively and we create a reputation,” he said. “And we haven’t had that early on in the season.”
The Suns forced 25 turnovers against Orlando and turned several defensive plays into transition opportunities.
Booker also praised Collin Gillespie’s leadership, describing the guard as a player who demands respect and helps organize the team.
“He’s a general out there,” Booker said. “He demands respect. He demands attention. If teams let him loose, they know what he can do to them.”
Phoenix now faces another difficult test against Houston on Saturday before meeting San Antonio the following night.
“Houston would be a great test for us Saturday,” Booker said. “And they’re all coming. San Antonio’s the next night after that. So, it’s a tough conference. It’s always been since I’ve been in the league. And you got to love it. Embrace the journey.”
