There is not yet significant momentum toward the Minnesota Timberwolves and Rudy Gobert agreeing to a contract extension, according to Jon Krawczynski. The veteran center is eligible for an extension, but discussions do not appear to be moving toward an immediate agreement.
“He is eligible for an extension. So far, I have not heard any sort of real momentum toward that happening immediately here,” Krawczynski said on The Jon Krawczynski Show, via HoopsHype. “I think it is something that the team will explore, that maybe Rudy would look at as well, as he gets a little, you know, as he gets older.”
Gobert, 34, is entering the second season of a three-year, $109.5 million contract with a player option for the final year. His current deal includes a $38 million player option for the 2027-28 season.
Krawczynski suggested that any potential extension could follow a similar structure to Gobert’s previous contract, with the center potentially accepting a lower annual salary in exchange for additional long-term security.
“We saw his last extension, he brought his number down a little bit more to make it more manageable to have a good team around him,” Krawczynski said. “I would imagine that if there was something to be done, it would be another scenario like that where his number, I think is at 31 or 33 million now, maybe comes down annually, but he gets a little bit more long-term security with a multi-year extension.”
Gobert has remained an important part of Minnesota’s success since arriving from the Utah Jazz in 2022. He averaged 10.9 points and 11.5 rebounds in 76 games during the 2025-26 regular season while shooting 68.2% from the field. He also averaged 1.6 blocks and earned All-Defensive First Team honors after finishing fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
The Timberwolves are entering the season with a significantly reshaped roster. Minnesota acquired LaMelo Ball during the offseason while losing Julius Randle and Naz Reid, and the team also re-signed Ayo Dosunmu to a five-year, $112 million contract and added Jonathan Kuminga.
Gobert remains projected to start at center alongside Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels and Kuminga, making his future an important part of Minnesota’s long-term roster planning.
The veteran center recently returned from France to join his teammates, with Krawczynski noting that most of the Timberwolves had already been working together since the beginning of September.
“I do not remember a time with covering this team where this many players were in this early playing and they’ve been working out daily together,” Krawczynski said.
