Johannes Voigtmann hit the decisive three-pointer as FC Bayern Munich survived a dramatic late comeback from Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv to win 86-84 in Anton Gavel’s first EuroLeague game as head coach.
Bayern appeared to be in complete control for much of the contest, building an 18-point lead early in the fourth quarter. But Hapoel responded with a 14-0 run that transformed the game before Antonio Blakeney completed the comeback with a three-point play to give the hosts an 82-81 advantage.
Elijah Bryant quickly restored Bayern’s lead with a jumper after Johannes Thiemann’s jump hook had put Hapoel ahead. Voigtmann then delivered the biggest shot of the night, knocking down a three-pointer to put Bayern in front for good.
Hapoel had opportunities to respond, but Vasilije Micic and Bryant both missed three-point attempts in the closing seconds, allowing Gavel to celebrate his first EuroLeague victory.
Andreas Obst led Bayern with 19 points and set the tone from the opening minutes. Obst attacked the basket, knocked down baseline jumpers, got to the foul line and remained vocal throughout the game. He finished with 19 points, two rebounds and two assists while shooting 7-of-8 from the field and posting a PIR of 19.
Bayern also received significant contributions from several new additions. Thiemann scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 19 minutes, shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line.
Tobias Jensen, the 2025-26 EuroCup Rising Star, made an immediate impact off the bench. He scored five points during his first six minutes and finished with five points, one rebound and two assists, while his plus-12 rating was the best on either team.
Voigtmann added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Justin Jessup scored 11 points on 4-of-5 two-point shooting and 2-of-4 from three-point range.
The result also showed how Bayern improved as the game progressed. After collecting no offensive rebounds, four assists and committing three turnovers in the opening quarter, Bayern produced nine offensive rebounds and 16 assists over the remainder of the game.
Bayern entered the second quarter trailing 21-16 but took a 44-39 lead into halftime. The advantage reached double digits at 61-51 after Rokas Jokubaitis drove for a layup, and the visitors eventually pushed the margin to 18 before Hapoel’s late surge.
