Anfernee Simons remembers Evan Turner as one of the funniest veterans he encountered early in his NBA career, although being Turner’s rookie teammate also meant handling some unusual errands.
Simons, who began his career with the Portland Trail Blazers, said Turner regularly found creative tasks for him and fellow young guard Gary Trent to complete.
“He was a great vet. Probably one of the funniest guys I’ve ever had as a teammate. He’s for sure top 3. He would have me and Gary Trent do insane runs for him.”
One assignment came during a trip to New York, when Turner needed help repairing an expensive pair of boots.
Despite the winter conditions, Simons and Trent were sent out to take care of the problem.
“For example, we was in New York, and a buckle broke on one of his Louis Vuitton boots. We had to go in the middle of the snow and go fix it at Louis Vuitton and take it to him.”
Turner’s Ferrari created another memorable situation. Because the sports car did not have enough room for his luggage, Simons had to transport the bags separately following late-night returns from lengthy road trips.
“There was another example. After long road trips, he had a Ferrari, so he couldn’t put any of his luggage in his car. I had to follow him home at 3 in the morning with his bags in my trunk just to take it home to him.”
