LeBron James’ free agency has entered an unusual phase, with interested teams now sending recorded voice messages to the four-time NBA champion as he continues evaluating his next destination.
According to ESPN insider Shams Charania on July 9, organizations pursuing James have been communicating through his longtime agent, Rich Paul, with some owners, presidents and general managers recording personal voice notes that are then forwarded to the 41-year-old forward. Charania described the messages as part of James’ information-gathering process rather than a sign that a decision is imminent.
Charania reported that Golden State, Cleveland, Miami, Minnesota and Philadelphia are among the leading suitors still involved in the process. He added that it remains unclear whether the Cavaliers or Heat have actually sent voice notes, noting both franchises already have longstanding relationships with James from his previous stints there.
The report highlights how James is approaching free agency without a fixed timetable. According to Charania, the veteran has spent recent weeks focusing on family, friends and golf while taking time to study each opportunity before making a final decision. James has also spent the last two weeks in the Akron, Ohio, area, including time with longtime friend Brandon Weems, who now serves as one of the Cavaliers’ top executives under president Koby Altman.
The latest development follows Charania’s earlier report that James informed the Los Angeles Lakers he intends to continue his career elsewhere. Since then, Paul has fielded interest from multiple contenders while helping James evaluate potential fits.
Golden State remains one of the most closely watched possibilities because of James’ well-documented relationship with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. The Warriors also have roster flexibility after Green declined his $27.7 million player option, a move that could help facilitate additional star acquisitions.
Cleveland continues to generate significant speculation as a potential reunion destination. The Cavaliers finished 52-30 during the 2025-26 regular season before advancing to the Eastern Conference finals, where they were swept by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks. James spent two separate stints with Cleveland, delivering the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2016.
Miami is another prominent contender after dramatically reshaping its roster by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks earlier this offseason. Philadelphia has also emerged as a serious candidate after adding Jaylen Brown to a roster that reached the second round of the 2026 playoffs.
One team that appears to be fading from the race is Denver. Charania reported earlier this week that the Nuggets are no longer viewed as a serious landing spot despite finishing 54-28 last season behind Nikola Jokic. Denver has instead remained focused on maintaining its existing core rather than creating a pathway for another superstar.
James remains one of the league’s most productive veterans entering his 24th NBA season. During the 2025-26 campaign, he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds across 60 games while helping the Lakers finish 53-29 and reach the Western Conference semifinals, where they were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
