Mike Schmitz said becoming general manager of the Dallas Mavericks is a major milestone early in his executive career.

The former ESPN draft analyst and Trail Blazers assistant GM officially joined Dallas on May 8 and will work under president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri.

“It’s been chaotic in a beautiful way. It’s not lost on me what an amazing opportunity this is,” Schmitz said.

“To be able to be a general manager for such a prestigious organization, working in unison with Masai … it’s a really, really important time.”

Schmitz also highlighted his longtime relationship with Ujiri, which developed through years of international scouting.

“I’m really thankful for that relationship and him bringing me on board,” Schmitz said.
