The Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers head into Game 5 of their Western Conference first-round series on Wednesday night with major injury implications shaping the matchup. The Lakers lead the series 3-1 entering the 10:00 PM ET tip at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The latest injury report confirms significant absences on both sides, with multiple rotation and star-level players ruled out or listed as questionable. The availability of key creators could heavily influence how both teams structure their half-court offense.

For Houston, Steven Adams is out after left ankle surgery, Kevin Durant remains out with a left ankle sprain, and Fred VanVleet is out following right knee ACL repair.

Durant’s absence is particularly impactful given his lone playoff appearance this series produced 23 points on efficient shooting across 41 minutes. Houston has leaned on Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson to generate most of its scoring and playmaking.

Sengun is averaging 22.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in the playoffs, while Thompson has posted 20.5 points and 6.8 assists per game while handling primary initiation duties.

On the Lakers side, Luka Doncic is out with a left hamstring strain, while Austin Reaves is listed as questionable with a strain. The absence of Doncic removes a primary offensive engine from Los Angeles entering a closeout opportunity.

Despite that, the Lakers have maintained balance through their remaining core. Luke Kennard is averaging 17.8 points on 52.2% shooting, while LeBron James is contributing 21.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game in the series.

Marcus Smart has also played a key dual role with 17.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 3.5 steals per game, helping stabilize backcourt creation in Doncic’s absence or limited availability scenarios.

The series itself has shifted momentum across four games, with the Lakers taking Games 1, 2, and 3 before Houston responded in Game 4 with a 115-96 win to extend the matchup. The Rockets now face elimination on the road.
